Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to staunchly defend his country’s positions as he prepares to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Speaking prior to his departure on Tuesday, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s resolve to assertively present its stance and safeguard the rights and interests of its citizens on the global stage.
Accompanying President Pezeshkian, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has already arrived in New York to spearhead Tehran’s delegation at the annual UN gathering. Shortly after his arrival on Monday, Araghchi engaged in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss matters related to the assembly.
Araghchi highlighted Iran’s primary goal at the UN event, stating it aims to underscore what Tehran perceives as the legitimate rights and interests of the Iranian populace. During the assembly, Araghchi plans to hold discussions with various foreign ministers and dignitaries present at the session.
The Iranian delegation’s participation in the UN General Assembly takes place amid persistent tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a crucial conduit for global oil and gas transit. Iran has communicated conditions through Qatar concerning the reopening of this vital maritime route, while the United States continues to impose sanctions targeting Iranian ports.
