In a recent phone conversation, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the critical role of Türkiye-European Union relations amidst rising regional tensions. Speaking with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Erdoğan highlighted that these tensions underscore the strategic significance of their partnership. The discussion included various aspects of Türkiye-EU relations as well as pressing regional and global issues, as reported by the Turkish Communications Directorate on the NSosyal platform.

Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to sustaining a cease-fire and fostering peace in ongoing regional conflicts. He specifically mentioned the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize the situation. The Turkish president also criticized Israel, accusing it of perpetuating regional conflicts and violating international law, including acts referred to as piracy. Erdoğan urged a collective international effort to increase pressure on Israel to cease these activities.

Additionally, Erdoğan advocated for Türkiye’s involvement in Europe’s security strategy initiatives, arguing that such inclusion would be advantageous for both parties. He called for an update to the Turkish-EU Customs Union and emphasized the need for expanded cooperation across various fields to enhance economic integration and promote mutual interests.
