Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a meeting with Devlet Bahçeli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), at the Presidential Complex in Ankara on Tuesday. The discussions centered around Türkiye’s “terror-free Türkiye” initiative and efforts to draft a new constitution.
The “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, which began in 2024, aims to eliminate terrorism in the country. This initiative followed a significant call by Bahçeli, urging Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK, to persuade the group to disarm. Öcalan responded in February 2025, initiating a disarmament process. The Turkish government is currently considering legal measures to support this process, which may include offering leniency to PKK members not directly involved in terrorist activities.
In addition to domestic issues, regional developments were also on the agenda. These included the Türkiye-Libya maritime boundary agreement, which was recently approved by Libya’s House of Representatives. Other topics likely to be discussed were the Mecca motion expected to be introduced to Parliament and the Badr Memorandum.
This meeting marked the fourth occasion Erdoğan and Bahçeli have met this year. Previous meetings took place on January 21, April 30, and August 26, highlighting the ongoing collaborative efforts between the two leaders to address significant national and regional issues.
