Türkiye is set to embark on a disarmament process involving the PKK and its affiliates, a move anticipated to enhance stability in Iraq and potentially bolster peace efforts throughout the region. This development was discussed by Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker, Numan Kurtulmuş, during a meeting with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi in Ankara. Kurtulmuş emphasized that the initiative, expected to commence next month, could play a crucial role in reinforcing peace and security not only in Iraq but also in Syria.
Linking the disarmament process to Türkiye’s broader vision of a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region,” Kurtulmuş called for increased regional cooperation to overcome longstanding divisions. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among neighboring countries to achieve lasting peace and stability.
Kurtulmuş also highlighted the strengthening ties between Türkiye and Iraq, pointing to recent agreements and memorandums established during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Iraq in 2024. Further strategic agreements were noted following the Iraqi prime minister’s visit to Türkiye in July, marking a period of enhanced bilateral relations.
Another focal point of cooperation between the two nations is the Development Road Project. This ambitious transport corridor aims to improve connectivity between Asia and Europe by passing through Iraq and Türkiye, thereby supporting economic growth across the region. Kurtulmuş expressed Türkiye’s full backing for the project, emphasizing the need to accelerate its implementation to ensure all components become operational swiftly.
Describing the Development Road Project as more than just an economic venture, Kurtulmuş highlighted its potential to connect communities, cities, and cultures through mutually beneficial cooperation. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards fostering regional unity and shared prosperity.
