In a significant diplomatic engagement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened in Istanbul to discuss enhancing strategic cooperation between their countries. The high-level talks, held at Vahdettin Palace, focused on a range of sectors including trade, defense, energy, infrastructure, and regional security, reflecting both nations’ commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship.
The discussions began with a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders, followed by broader delegation-level talks that included senior officials from Turkey and Pakistan. Central to their agenda was the ambition to boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately $1.2–1.35 billion, significantly below the target of $5 billion. The talks also explored avenues for increasing Turkish investment in Pakistan’s key sectors such as energy, agriculture, transport, and technology.
Defense collaboration emerged as a cornerstone of the dialogue, with both sides exploring opportunities for enhanced cooperation in military equipment, joint training, intelligence sharing, and potential future co-production initiatives. The leaders underscored the importance of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council as a pivotal mechanism for advancing their mutual interests across these multifaceted areas.
Regional security issues also featured prominently, with discussions encompassing developments in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and shared counter-terrorism efforts. By coordinating closely on these regional challenges, Turkey and Pakistan aim to bolster their strategic partnership further.
Following the comprehensive talks, Erdoğan and Sharif were expected to announce the outcomes and any newly forged agreements during a joint press conference, setting the stage for a deeper, more collaborative partnership between the two nations.
