Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region, expressing concerns over Athens’ expanding defense ties with Israel. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire to maintain amicable relations with Greece but urged consideration of security concerns, particularly regarding Greece’s defense collaboration with Israel and military deployments on Aegean islands, which Türkiye believes should remain demilitarized under existing agreements.
The relationship between Greece and Türkiye has seen efforts at improvement, yet unresolved disputes persist over maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the militarization of Aegean islands. Greece maintains that its defense initiatives, including those with Israel, are necessary for safeguarding its sovereignty and addressing security challenges.
Additionally, Fidan criticized Israel’s military actions in Syria, labeling them as potential threats to regional stability. He voiced Türkiye’s support for Syria’s endeavors to enhance security, governance, and economic growth, advocating for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.
Fidan also discussed ongoing regional security collaboration involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He indicated that these nations are in the process of establishing the framework for a burgeoning security partnership, with discussions on expanding cooperative efforts. Türkiye remains committed to fostering regional security coordination, particularly in addressing threats involving Yemen and safeguarding Saudi Arabia, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement and regional stability.
