In a bid to address the growing presence of AI-generated music on its platform, Spotify is set to introduce measures aimed at distinguishing artificial artists from human performers. Starting in September, the streaming giant will label AI-created artist identities with an “AI persona” marker on both artist profiles and track listings. This initiative is designed to help users recognize whether the music they’re listening to is produced by real musicians or generated by artificial intelligence.
As part of this new approach, Spotify will automatically exclude AI personas from personalized music recommendations. This move intends to protect genuine musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated content, ensuring they maintain their visibility on the platform. To further support this transparency effort, Spotify will allow AI-generated artists to disclose their nature, while also employing human reviewers and AI technology to identify any AI personas that have not been declared.
The decision comes amid a significant increase in AI-generated music, with Spotify previously reporting the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a year. This figure underscores the challenge the platform faces in managing the influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music streaming services.
Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency as generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry. The company acknowledges that listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether the creators behind their favorite tracks are human artists or AI-generated identities. By implementing these new measures, Spotify aims to provide clarity and maintain the integrity of the listening experience.
