Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is optimistic about the possibility of Denmark and the United States finding a peaceful resolution to issues concerning Greenland and the broader Arctic region. Her remarks came after attending the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, where she acknowledged the increasing pressures faced by Greenland and expressed gratitude for the support of European partners.
Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s desire to enhance collaboration with the United States on security and defense matters, particularly regarding Greenland. A high-level working group dedicated to Greenland continues to engage in discussions, and while Frederiksen noted that it is still early to draw conclusions, she remains hopeful for progress.
The summit, held from September 13 to 14, aimed to reinforce a unified European approach towards the Arctic as it becomes strategically and geopolitically significant. Frederiksen also pointed to the growing cooperation among European and transatlantic partners on Arctic security, with several allied nations conducting exercises in Greenland as part of efforts to secure the region.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been a focal point of international interest, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a desire to bring it under American control. This ambition has created tensions between Washington, Copenhagen, and other European allies.
