A medical professional recently highlighted five remarkable facts about sleep that most people have never encountered. Among the most striking revelations is the finding that women, on average, need approximately 20 more minutes of sleep each night than men. The reason, researchers believe, lies in the greater cognitive load women typically carry throughout their waking hours.

Multitasking — switching between tasks, managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously — demands more from the brain. And when the brain works harder, it needs more time to recover and consolidate. Sleep is when that recovery happens, making adequate rest especially critical for those whose days involve high levels of mental juggling.

Beyond the gender difference, the physician also highlighted the importance of how quickly you fall asleep. A window of 10 to 20 minutes is considered ideal — quick enough to suggest you’re tired, but not so quick that it signals dangerous levels of exhaustion. Both extremes deserve attention and, potentially, a conversation with a healthcare provider.

Rounding out the five facts: nearly all dreams vanish from memory within minutes of waking; extended wakefulness of 17-plus hours mimics mild intoxication in terms of cognitive impairment; and when using melatonin supplements, sticking to a dose of just 0.5 mg often outperforms larger amounts by more closely mimicking the body’s natural secretion levels.
