The Turkish Cabinet, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is set to convene to deliberate on pressing domestic and regional issues, including the recent surge in wildfires, the “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, and the latest developments in Gaza.
A primary focus of the meeting will be the widespread wildfires that have ravaged Türkiye amidst unusually high temperatures. Ministers are expected to provide updates on the ongoing efforts to combat these blazes, which have been particularly severe this year due to a scorching heatwave gripping the country since mid-July. As of Sunday, firefighters and volunteers were battling dozens of fires across the country, with the Agriculture and Forestry Minister reporting that 84 blazes were contained on Saturday alone.
Another key agenda item for the Cabinet is the “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, launched last year, which aims for the disarmament of the PKK terrorist group. This meeting precedes the first session of a parliamentary committee established to address this initiative. The Cabinet will assess the progress of the initiative, particularly following the PKK’s recent disarmament actions in northern Iraq.
The Cabinet will also discuss the evolving situation in Gaza, where Israel declared a “tactical pause” in its attacks. This comes amid mounting international pressure and the initial flow of limited aid to Palestinians affected by the conflict. Türkiye has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, advocating for humanitarian aid delivery despite challenges posed by the blockade.
