South Africa has taken a 1-0 lead in the ODI series after a comprehensive 98-run victory over Australia, built on the back of solid batting and a game-changing spell of spin bowling from Keshav Maharaj. The hosts were bundled out for 198, failing to chase down South Africa’s total of 8-296.
The turning point came midway through the Australian innings. After a solid 60-run opening partnership, the introduction of spin proved catastrophic for the home side. Maharaj was the chief tormentor, claiming a career-best 5-33 as Australia lost six wickets in a hurry. His performance completely nullified the strong start and put the Proteas on a clear path to victory.
The foundation for South Africa’s win was laid by their batsmen. Aiden Markram played a superb innings of 82, while Temba Bavuma contributed a vital 65. This allowed them to post a formidable total, even as part-time spinner Travis Head caused some trouble with a four-wicket haul. A late flurry from Wiaan Mulder (31*) ensured the final score was a challenging one.
Only Mitch Marsh, the Australian captain, showed resilience with the bat, scoring 88. However, his innings lacked support from the rest of the lineup, who crumbled under the pressure exerted by Maharaj. The result is a significant blow for Australia, who were playing without star paceman Pat Cummins, while the Proteas overcame the absence of Kagiso Rabada.
