Among the many remarkable moments in India’s 96-run demolition of New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final, one stood out for its sheer improbability. Ishan Kishan, sprinting at full pace to take a catch, saw the ball bounce from his hands on landing, only for it to lodge between his chin and arm as his cap simultaneously fell over his eyes. That the catch stood — and was ultimately given out — seemed to sum up a night when everything went India’s way.

India posted 255, their third total above 250 in the tournament and a score that New Zealand were never likely to chase. The innings was built on a spectacular powerplay of 92 without loss, featuring Abhishek Sharma’s 18-ball fifty and early contributions from Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. New Zealand’s bowlers were helpless as the runs poured freely.

Samson’s 89 off 46 balls was the bedrock of India’s total, a composed and commanding innings that demonstrated his world-class credentials. Kishan added 54 off 25 before his own acrobatic dismissal ended his innings. Even after four wickets fell in five overs late in the innings, India had more than enough runs on the board.

Bumrah was devastating with the ball, making short work of New Zealand’s top order with his trademark slow yorkers. He finished with three wickets and the man-of-the-match award, capping a tournament in which he has been consistently outstanding. The New Zealand batters had no answer to his accuracy and pace combination.

India are now back-to-back T20 World Cup champions, a first in men’s cricket, and the achievement was sealed on home soil in front of their adoring supporters. This team, this group of players, have achieved something that will never be forgotten. Indian cricket has reached a new summit.
