Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to visit Ukraine on May 29-30, just days after high-level meetings in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The visit underscores Türkiye’s renewed commitment to fostering peace and enhancing strategic cooperation amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Invited by Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and other top officials, including Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak. These talks are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties in trade, energy, defense, and security under the Ankara-Kyiv strategic partnership.
Fidan will reaffirm Türkiye’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while emphasizing the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the war. He is expected to offer Türkiye’s continued role as a mediator, building on the prisoner exchange achieved during the recent talks in Istanbul. Ankara has expressed readiness to host further negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.
The visit will also address broader regional and global dynamics, as well as Türkiye’s interest in contributing to Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and Black Sea maritime security. In a show of solidarity, Fidan will meet with representatives of Ukraine’s Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turk communities, including Crimean Tatar leaders Mustafa Kırımoğlu and Refat Chubarov.
Türkiye’s consistent diplomatic engagement with both Ukraine and Russia reflects its strategic balancing role and its dedication to peacebuilding in the region.
